100-vehicle wreck closes part of Pennsylvania Turnpike near Philly

(CNN) - About 100 vehicles were involved in a series of wrecks on the eastbound Pennsylvania Turnpike just north of Philadelphia on Friday morning, injuring at least 30 people and causing an hours-long traffic backup for miles over parts of two counties, officials said.

Glare from the rising sun and ice - left over from a storm that dropped snow and freezing rain in the Philadelphia area - might have been factors, state police Trooper Adam Reed said.

Philly area county official: February snow storms wreaking more havoc than Sandy

(CNN) – At least 12 deaths have been blamed on the severe weather across the nation. On Thursday, snow walloped Washington, Philadelphia and Boston.

A winter storm hit Philadelphia just last week.

"We get about 2,400 calls to our 911 center each day. We got nearly 8,000 calls from the storm last week. By comparison during Sandy, about 6,500 calls at the height," Josh Shapiro, chair Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, told CNN.

"We saw more damage, more power outage in this storm than during Sandy," said Shapiro.

The area is currently expecting between 14 to 18 inches of snow. Shapiro described the period now as the calm between the two storms.

CNN's Margaret Conley reports.
