Israel launches ground operation into Gaza

Gaza City (CNN) - The Israeli military launched a ground operation into Gaza late Thursday, the government said.

The much-anticipated operation follows some of the most intense fighting in the 10 days of bombings and airstrikes between Israel and Hamas.

Palestinian medical and security sources say 240 people have been killed in Gaza, including at least seven children who died Thursday, and about 1,800 injured. Israel says one of its citizens has died.

Cease-fire effort collapses as rockets, airstrikes continue

Gaza City (CNN) - An Egypt-backed cease-fire between Israel and Hamas fell apart Tuesday as rocket attacks from Gaza were again answered by Israeli airstrikes.

The rocket attacks from Hamas militants in Gaza never ceased, Israeli officials said. For its part, Israel refrained from airstrikes for about six hours before announcing it was resuming them.

A CNN crew witnessed at least five Israeli strikes just as the announcement was made.

Palestinians struggle to find safety as Israel and Hamas continue attacks

Gaza City (CNN) - One bomb fell on a center for the disabled. Another wiped out 18 members of the same family.

By Monday, the death toll from nearly a week of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza had reached 185 - all of them Palestinians - with at least 1,385 wounded, according to Palestinian health authorities.

The death toll is now higher than the number killed in Gaza during the 2012 war.

'We have nothing'

Over the weekend, Israel dropped leaflets instructing residents to leave northern areas of Gaza, where it planned to carry out strikes. But Hamas, which controls Gaza, told people to stay put.

Hopes of a cease-fire in the Middle East

(CNN) – Egypt called for a cease-fire Monday between Israel and Palestinian factions in Gaza, to stop the bloodshed and to project the innocent.

Palestinian groups in Gaza had called on Egypt to intervene and pressure Israel.

"Egypt shall receive guarantees from both sides of their commitment to implement what has been agreed upon, and shall follow up on its implementation and engage with either side in the case of any action that impinges on its stability," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The Israeli cabinet called an emergency meeting Monday to consider Egypt's ceasefire proposal.

Palestinian teen's abduction, killing intensifies tensions in Mideast

Jerusalem (CNN) - The discovery of a slain Palestinian teen in Jerusalem early Wednesday triggered clashes between Israelis and Palestinians, further inflaming tensions that spiked this week with the discovery of the three Israeli teens' bodies.

Mohammad Abu Khedair, 17, was heading from his Jerusalem home to a mosque for prayers around 4 a.m. when three men forced him into a car and drove away, his father, Hussain Abu Khedair, told CNN. His body was discovered about an hour later at a forest in the city.
