Kerry: Framework exists for Mideast cease-fire

(CNN) - Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday there was a framework for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas but more needed to be done to make it happen.

Earlier, the Israeli Cabinet rejected a proposed one-week humanitarian cease-fire but Kerry said no final proposal was submitted to Israel for a vote.

"Let's make that clear," Kerry told reporters in Cairo. "There is always mischief from people who oppose certain things, and I consider this one of those mischievous things."

Kerry: Senate delays on diplomats harm national security

(CNN) - Calling attention to a logjam of stalled diplomatic nominations in the Senate, Secretary of State John Kerry said the delay is harming U.S. national security.

In direct public commentary on an issue crossing politics and diplomacy, Kerry called for swift approval of the nominees, many of whom are career diplomats. Some were selected for difficult jobs in global hotspots.

"Make no mistake: Vacancies in so many world capitals send a dangerous message to allies and adversaries alike about America's engagement," Kerry said in an opinion piece for Politico on Tuesday.

Iranian hostage crisis figure seeks U.N. credentials

(CNN) - Iran has named a member of the radical student group that seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and held Americans hostage for more than a year to be its next ambassador to the United Nations.

Hamid Aboutalebi, a member of the Muslim Students Following the Imam's Line, the group of militants who seized the U.S. embassy on November 4, 1979, holding 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.

A U.S. official said the State Department has not yet responded to Aboutalebi's visa application to represent Iran at the United Nations.

Syria defiant at conference; Kerry rules out al-Assad

(CNN) - A preliminary session of Syrian peace talks meant to end three years of bloodshed was an important "first, small step," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday after a morning of bitter exchanges.

Speaking to reporters after the first leg of talks, Ban said a "difficult road" lay ahead, but the time had come for negotiations.
