U.N. spokesman on shelter hit in Gaza: There's no excuse for firing at shelters

(CNN) – At least 16 people were killed and many more were wounded when a U.N. shelter in northern Gaza was hit during Thursday's fighting, officials said.

"What is clear is that our schools, our facilities of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, UNRA, are clearly marked. We've given out the coordinates for those schools," said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the U.N. Secretary General.

Fmr. NTSB official: Recent plane crashes are a coincidence

(CNN) – For the third time in just one week, a passenger plane has crashed.

But a former National Transportation Safety Board official says it is still safe to fly, and this is all just a horrible coincidence.

Sen. Ayotte: It's time for Europe to step up on sanctions against Russia

(CNN) – A day before the shoot down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, the United States expanded sanctions against Russia, targeting two banks, two energy companies, Ukraine separatists and defense companies.

But in the wake of the downing of Flight 17, and the U.S. now saying it has proof that Russia is firing into Ukraine, Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-New Hampshire, is calling on Europe to do more.

"It is time for Europe to step up," Ayotte said in an interview with CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper."

Investigators discover new MH17 wreckage

(CNN) – A week after Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crashed in eastern Ukraine, the crash site, with wreckage spreading out for miles, is still not secured.

Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he has sent 50 Australian police to London so that they can be deployed to help lock down the crash site in Ukraine. Abbott says he realizes the rebel-controlled area could be dangerous, but that he has Russian President Vladimir Putin's support.

Incredibly, investigators on site have discovered a huge new piece of wreckage.

Dutch reporter on MH17 procession: 'We saw today what this country is made of'

A grief-stricken nation took to roadways and overpasses to pay their respects to some 40 victims of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 as the procession traveled through the Netherlands today.

"We saw today what this country is made of," said Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal, a reporter for NOS Dutch Broadcasting Nieuwsuur and witness to the day's remarkable tribute.
