(CNN) Under the cover of darkness 40 special operations forces tried to storm a compound in a remote part of Yemen Friday where American Luke Somers and South African Pierre Korkie were being held.
The relief group Gift of the Givers, which was helping secure Korkie's release, had recently informed his wife that "the waiting is almost over." She went to bed Friday night thinking her husband would be on his way home, only to woke up the next morning to the news that he had been killed. She had been a hostage as well.
(CNN) - A now-discredited Rolling Stone story detailed a University of Virginia student named Jackie who was allegedly gang raped at a fraternity.
Friends of Jackie tell CNN the young woman is feeling very overwhelmed, and did not expect this reaction. They say they stand by Jackie, and while they acknowledge there appears to be inaccuracies in her story, they believe something bad happened to her.

(CNN) – A former St. Louis police officer says racism in the St. Louis police force "is widespread."
"It's a major problem. The anger you see in the streets right now is in no small part due to the fact that you do have officers that bring that racism to the job and the power to act on it," Redditt Hudson said in an interview with CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper.
