Obama sends 1,500 troops to Iraq

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama is sending up to 1,500 more soldiers to Iraq to train Iraqi and Kurdish forces to fight ISIS, in a deployment that would almost double the total number of American troops there to 2,900.

The White House said in a statement that it will also ask Congress for another $5.6 billion to fund the fight against ISIS. The troops will not have a combat role, and will operate from bases outside Baghdad and Erbil.

To date, Anbar province and Taji district have been considered as two likely locations for operations centers outside of Baghdad and Erbil. CNN reported last week that the military was preparing plans to deploy U.S. advisers to Anbar, much of which is under the control of ISIS.

Is Kim Jong Un more dangerous than his dad?

(CNN) – A former bodyguard to the late North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il tells CNN son Kim Jong Un be even more dangerous than his father.

"Kim Jong Un ended up killing his uncle, who even Kim Jong Il could not kill," said Lee Young-guk.

"As power was handed down to the third generation, it became crueler. Kim Jong Un has created loyalty, but it is fake and based on fear," he said.

Former Clinton administration National Security Council official Jamie Metzl, author of "Genesis Code," weighs in on the significance of Lee's story.

Did airbag company hide deadly defect?

(CNN) – Manufacturer Takata is under investigation, accused of covering up the potential dangers of exploding airbags for years. The new allegations were first reported by The New York Times.

At least four deaths and multiple injuries have been linked to the faulty bags. In one deadly case, police say the woman suffered what looked like stab wounds in her neck, but it is believed metal shrapnel from the exploding airbag caused her injuries.

Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, and Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, called on the Department of Justice Friday to open a criminal investigation.

More U.S. troops going to more dangerous locations in Iraq

(CNN) – President Barack Obama is sending up to 1,500 more soldiers to Iraq to train Iraqi and Kurdish forces to fight ISIS, in a deployment that would almost double the total number of American troops there to 2,900.

Up until now, U.S. military advisers in Iraq have been confined to Baghdad and Erbil, two relatively safe locations in Iraq well-protected by Iraqi Security Forces and the Kurds.

To date, Anbar province and Taji district have been considered as two likely locations for operations centers outside of Baghdad and Erbil. CNN reported last week that the military was preparing plans to deploy U.S. advisers to Anbar, much of which is under the control of ISIS.

CNN's Jim Sciutto reports.
