(CNN) – Pop star Taylor Swift's latest album "1989" sold 1.2 million copies in one week, making it the first of the year to go platinum.
The last album that went platinum was "The Eminem Show," back in 2002 - before the iPod era, before Twitter, before Instagram.
Why has it taken so long to see this kind of success in the music industry, and how was Swift able to do it?
