(CNN) – Canadian lawmaker John McKay came to Parliament Hill Wednesday morning, prepared to caucus.
"(I was) literally taking off my coat and I heard this pop, pop, pop," McKay said.
The Liberal MP says he didn't think much of the sound at first, believing it to be noise from ongoing construction on Parliament Hill. But then "security people came racing down the hall and ushered us out of the building asap and they sent us out the back of the building," he said.
The shooter entered Parliament through the front doors, and was chased by security down the Hall of Honour. He was stopped outside the Library of Parliament, at the end of the hall, where caucus rooms for the government and the opposition are located. Inside those two caucus rooms were key Canadian politicians.
"It's a pretty serious place to have a gun fight," said McKay.
