(CNN) – Kurdish fighters took on ISIS in a battle for the border between Syria and Turkey Friday.
The firefight, witnessed by CNN, shows "how forward deployed ISIS is right now," said former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Gen. George Joulwan (Ret.). "They are right at the border."
"It also demonstrates the role of Turkey, or the lack of a role of Turkey," he said. "What struck me is we have an air base six miles from where (the fight) took place ... a U.S. air base, a NATO base, not being used."
