(CNN) – The fight to defeat terrorist group ISIS in Syria and Iraq will take years, says a Pentagon official.
"We've been very clear-eyed about the threat that these folks pose in the region and to American interests, elsewhere, too. We've all been saying that this is going to be a long, difficult, complicated struggle," said Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby.
"It's been characterized in terms of years. I think that's accurate," Kirby said.

(CNN) – U.S. officials have known al Qaeda operatives in Syria, known as Khorasan, were plotting attacks since at least this spring.
But more recently intelligence suggested they were in an advanced stage of planning an attack, possibly against the U.S. using Western recruits. U.S. officials say they had to act fast to disrupt them.

(CNN) – Former Jordanian foreign minister Marwan Muasher, also a CNN Mideast analyst, confirmed reports that Jordan joined the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS after uncovering a number of ISIS terrorists within its country.
"A number of attempts by ISIS to infiltrate into Jordan were taken particularly in the last few days. These were all repelled, including one that took place yesterday," Muasher said in an interview with CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper."
