Fmr. State Dept. official: ISIS will carry out another 9/11 unless Obama takes them more seriously

(CNN) – A former special assistant to five American ambassadors in Iraq says the Obama administration is not taking the militant group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, seriously enough.

"They don't take the threat of transnational jihad seriously enough, as demonstrated by President Obama's assessment of ISIS a few months ago, calling them the JV team," said Ali Khedery, referring to comments Obama made to The New Yorker magazine, comparing the militant group to a junior varsity basketball team.

"In reality, ISIS represents the most virulent form of Islamic jihad the planet has ever seen. These folks are not Muslims, they are animals, frankly. They are a group that is so vicious, and so blood-thirsty, and such a death cult, that even core al Qaeda leadership – bin Laden's successors namely – have disavowed them," Khedery said in an interview with CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper."

Daughter and boyfriend held in Bali after mother's body found in suitcase

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) - The cabbie probably thought nothing of it when the young couple left their large hard-sided suitcase in the trunk of his car and went back into the five-star hotel.

But after a lengthy wait, the young man and woman still hadn't returned. Puzzled, the driver called hotel security.

The suitcase in the trunk looked very odd. It was wrapped in a bedsheet. Then the cabbie saw blood.

U.S. considers air evacuation of refugees in northern Iraq

Washington (CNN) - Additional U.S. military advisers are now on the ground in northern Iraq with the Obama administration considering a possible air evacuation of thousands of minority Yazidis under threat from Islamic State militants and trapped on Mount Sinjar.

President Barack Obama ordered nearly 130 advisers to Irbil to assess the situation, and it's now likely that a small number of them will travel to the mountain area to get a first-hand look at what might be possible.

The new group comprised of Marines and special forces adds to the hundreds of other American advisers already in the country advising Iraqi troops in their fight against Sunni militants from the Islamic State, an al Qaeda off-shoot formally known as ISIS.
