(CNN) – An Israeli has been killed in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. He was a volunteer delivering food to Israelie soldiers at a nearby checkpoint.
It is the first fatality for Israel. The death toll from a week of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza has reached 194. The United Nations has said that most of the people killed by Israel's aerial attacks are civilians.
"We weren't targeting any civilians," Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer said in an interview with CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper."
The Israeli military says it uses a variety of methods, including phone calls and leaflets, to warn civilians of impending strikes.
"We're doing everything to keep their civilians out of harm's way. We're not perfect," Dermer said.
