(CNN) - Folks on the East Coast might need their umbrellas July 4 if a low-pressure area in the Atlantic becomes a tropical storm.
The National Hurricane Center says the low-pressure area about 140 miles east of Melbourne, Florida, has a 60% chance of developing into a tropical system in the next two days.
The rains could put a damper on July 4 activities from the Carolinas to the Northeast.

(CNN) – General Motors offered at least $1 million Monday to the families of those who died as a result of a faulty ignition switch in GM cars, giving another $300,000 for each surviving spouse and dependent, as well as a sum of money that will be determined by the victims' earning potential.
GM's official death tally attributed to the defect was 13; the car maker only counted those killed in the front seat when the air bags did not deploy.
But attorney Kenneth Feinberg, the administrator for GM's compensation fund, is also counting backseat passengers, people killed in side-impact accidents, and others.
"If there's an accident attributable to an ignition switch, then it's not only the driver that has a viable claim, it's any passengers in the automobile, it's pedestrians, it is the occupants of a second vehicle that collided with the defective vehicle," said Feinberg.

(CNN) – Three Israeli teens, including one who had dual citizenship in the U.S., were found and confirmed dead Monday by Israeli officials. The teens had vanished more than two weeks ago from a settlement in the contested West Bank, according to the Israeli military.
Their bodies were discovered in a field north of the town of Hebron.
Almost immediately after reports of the bodies being found trickled out, CNN journalists spotted Israeli fighter jets buzzing over the rooftops in Gaza.
Weeks of night raids and security sweeps had turned up nothing. Israeli forces scoured some Palestinian towns for the first time in a decade, and arrested more than 400 Palestinians. Five died in the clashes between Israeli Defense Forces and members of Hamas, the current partner of the Palestinian coalition government.
Hamas – considered a terrorist group by both Israel and the United States – applauded, but did not take credit for the kidnapping.
"The head of Hamas celebrated the kidnapping today and called for more kidnappings. We know that members of Hamas in the Hebron area, they're the ones responsible," said Israel's ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer.
