Australian Amb.: 'We're not taking a bean counter's attitude' to Flight 370 search costs

(CNN) – Australians are leading the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, reportedly paying half of the more than $44 million price tag so far.

But the country's prime minister's instincts, and Australians' is "naturally generous," says Australian Ambassador to the U.S. Kim Beazley.

"We're not taking a bean counter's attitude" to the cost the search, Beazley says.

Source: Malaysia scrambled jets to look for missing plane soon after disappearance

(CNN) – A senior Malaysian government official and another source involved in the investigation divulged Thursday a number of details about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370:

• Malaysian air force search aircraft were scrambled about 8 a.m. March 8 to the South China Sea and the Strait of Malacca, soon after Malaysia Airlines reported that its plane was missing, Malaysian sources told CNN. The aircraft took off before authorities corroborated data indicating that the plane turned back westward, a senior Malaysian government official told CNN.

• But the air force did not inform the Department of Civil Aviation or search and rescue operations until three days later, March 11, a source involved in the investigation told CNN.

After Pennsylvania school stabbing, authorities and community ask: 'Why?'

Murrysville, Pennsylvania (CNN) - A day after a Pennsylvania student rampaged through his high school's hallways, stabbing wildly with two kitchen knives, hints of a motive remain elusive.

Who is 16-year-old Alex Hribal, and what troubled him?

Hribal was charged as an adult and faces four counts of attempted homicide and 21 counts of aggravated assault related to the 21 people he allegedly wounded.

Some classmates at Franklin Regional Senior High School describe him as having few friends and being quiet, but also as a "really nice kid."

House Republicans vote to hold former IRS official in contempt

Washington (CNN) – The Republican-led House Oversight Committee voted 21-12 Thursday to charge former IRS official Lois Lerner with contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions about the agency's targeting of conservative and other groups. The vote sets up a full debate on the House floor, followed by possible court battle over the Fifth Amendment and a potential standoff with the Justice Department.
