The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Although the U.S. accounts for only 5% of the world's population, it holds 25% of its prisoners.
A big reason for that, are mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses.
Being in possession of 100 plants or 100 kilograms of marijuana, or 28 grams of crack cocaine, or 500 grams of powder cocaine, or 100 grams of heroin, or 5 grams of pure meth, or 1 gram of LSD results in a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison.
And the penalties only get harsher from there.
But all that is changing.
