The fundamental question at the heart of the George Zimmerman case, according to NewYorker.com contributor Jelani Cobb, is – was Trayvon Martin a member of the Florida community where he was shot and killed?
"When we talk about George Zimmerman's role in being a protector, as being kind of neighborhood watch person, did he have a responsibility to protect Trayvon Martin? Did it ever occur to him that this might be someone who was worthy of protection?" said Cobb.
The defense Friday argued for acquittal after the prosecution had presented their case.
"When the defense presented their argument, it really didn't seem to give any idea that Trayvon Martin might have been an innocent victim here," said Cobb.
