Australian PM 'confident' signals are from 'black box'; officials play down 5th ping

(CNN) - The painstaking search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 got a vote of confidence Friday that the effort is headed in the right direction, but officials noted that much work remains.

"We have very much narrowed down the search area, and we are very confident that the signals that we are detecting are from the black box," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said during an official visit to China, where he met with President Xi Jinping.

Abbott was referring to the plane's flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. Locator beacons attached to them are designed to emit high-pitched signals, or pings.

Source: Malaysia scrambled jets to look for missing plane soon after disappearance

(CNN) – A senior Malaysian government official and another source involved in the investigation divulged Thursday a number of details about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370:

• Malaysian air force search aircraft were scrambled about 8 a.m. March 8 to the South China Sea and the Strait of Malacca, soon after Malaysia Airlines reported that its plane was missing, Malaysian sources told CNN. The aircraft took off before authorities corroborated data indicating that the plane turned back westward, a senior Malaysian government official told CNN.

• But the air force did not inform the Department of Civil Aviation or search and rescue operations until three days later, March 11, a source involved in the investigation told CNN.

Fort Hood shooting: Psychiatric issues 'fundamental underlying causal factor'

Killeen, Texas (CNN) – The gunman in Wednesday's shooting at Fort Hood, Spc. Ivan Lopez, had a history of instability.

"We have very strong evidence that he had a medical history that indicates an unstable psychiatric or psychological condition. (We're) going through all records to ensure that is, in fact, is correct. But we believe that to be the fundamental underlying causal factor," Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, the post's commanding general, told reporters Thursday.

Fort Hood shooting: 'Texans' hearts are once again very heavy'

Killeen, Texas (CNN) - A day after a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, left three soldiers dead and 16 wounded, a profile emerged Thursday of the killer as an experienced soldier who was grappling with mental illness, but no answers were forthcoming as to a possible motive.

The incident began Wednesday at about 4 p.m., when Spc. Ivan Lopez, 34, went from one building at the sprawling Texas military base to a second, firing his .45-caliber handgun.

Obama says 7.1 million sign up for health care

Washington (CNN) - After a surge on the last day of open enrollment, Obamacare met the original White House target of 7 million sign-ups, President Barack Obama said Tuesday at what amounts to a victory for his administration.

In fact, he said at a White House ceremony the number of people who picked a plan on federal and state exchanges was slightly over the threshold at 7.1 million.

On Monday, the final day for Americans to sign up on the federal exchanges, more than 4.8 million visits were made to HealthCare.gov and 2 million calls were made to the call center, officials said.

Obama said the health care law has "made our health care system a lot better" by allowing millions of Americans to access insurance who previously didn't have it.
