Jack Dorsey on his desire to be mayor of New York City, Steve Jobs, and being a bachelor

By Jake Tapper and Sherisse Pham

Join us at 4pm for our full interview with Twitter's Jack Dorsey

Jack Dorsey, Mayor of New York City?

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is based in San Francisco, but has said being mayor of New York City would be his dream job,

The "desire to be mayor is more of an aspirational kind, or raising the bar of how I should be thinking," says Dorsey.

The 36-year-old has already met a high bar in terms of accomplishment - after stepping down from day-to-day operations at Twitter, he went on to found the mobile payment device Square. Dorsey's net worth is reportedly more than a billion dollars - so he already shares some common ground with the current mayor of New York.

"I think that Mayor Bloomberg has done an amazing job, and I and a lot of Silicon Valley look to him as a guiding light because he’s completely rethought what it means to be mayor," says Dorsey. Bloomberg is "operating a city from the best practices from the best practices of operating an business and the best practices of operating a government."

Looking around New York City, however, the design genius must see inefficiencies, and room for improvement.

"In terms of design, not design being visual but design being this desire to find the quickest path to understanding and really indicating the function through the form, [Bloomberg's] done that with the city, so he's really designed a great city and I hope it continues," says Dorsey.

If he were mayor, the tech genius says he would continue to improve the city.

"I think the one thing technology gives us is greater participation and speed. It changes velocity and the number of people who can participate, so I would look to integrate more technologies into the city, and thereby more participation, more speed of change."

The comparisons to Steve Jobs

The young designer has been compared to Steve Jobs, the Apple designer who changed how we listen to music with the iPod, and shook up the smartphone industry with the iPhone.

"It's definitely humbling," Dorsey says of the comparison. One lesson he says he learned from Jobs is to never follow in somebody's footsteps.

"The biggest thing I learned from Steve Jobs is he was more than anything else an artist and he had no constraint of what he wanted to see in the world, and he had this amazing ability to convince people it should exist," says Dorsey.

"I'm upset that I never got to meet him, but if you really want to know any artist you look at their work and you know them through their work, so I feel like I know him," says Dorsey. "I know what he was about and what he wanted to see the world become."

Being an eligible bachelor

Being a 30-something single billionaire tech genius would likely affect a guy's approach to the dating scene. For Dorsey, it means finding time outside of the office - where he reportedly puts in 80 hours a week - to even find a romantic relationship.

"I look for very, very deep relationships, I'm very discerning," says Dorsey. "I have very few but I love my friends, I love my friendships, so it takes me a long time to just enter into a relationship and find the right person, but when I do it's really deep and meaningful and I tend to give myself 100 percent to things I love and believe in."
